THE TEXT BOOK - PROCESS

PITCH

Kim is happy to respond with a short director’s treatment in reaction to a brief, script or story board.

“My own experience at agency level means I’m committed to the process of bringing a creative team’s concept to fruition. I enjoy utilizing different styles and genres of filmmaking to achieve this. But I am very reverent to their vision and their words. You never know how much they have been through to get it to the stage it is at. I prefer to dig in and discover what the creative team is after rather than superimposing some idea that may not fit the bill.”

Kim will work with you to tailor his director’s treatment so that it cleverly makes most of the budget. He may also be able supply some additional examples of his previous work to assist your team to win the brief with him as Director.

PRE-PRODUCTION

Once commissioned, Kim is ready to assist with his advice on scheduling, department heads, casting, locations, wardrobe, styling, sound and production design.

“I’ll draw a rough story board that’s good enough for me and the DP to start planning. It contains the ‘math’ and the angles needed to tell the story in the time we have to shoot. I often compose shots so I can concertina the best parts of the acting and the action into thirty seconds. This is one of the principal technical considerations the director must take into account that differs between TVC and long form.”

On the shoot I try to make sure the actors are always looked after. Their performance is what we are there to capture.

THE SHOOT

“Paying my dues working my way up the ranks on other major productions was terrific training for the work I do now”

It has been said, there is often a great atmosphere on Kim’s shoots.

“I like to think its like a science lab on the verge of some sort of discovery...then everyone starts laughing!”
This room used to be round
Where's my megaphone
Visions split blues
“There is nothing a team of clever people can’t solve on a film shoot. Lets face it; they created the problem half the time so they can also fix it!”
This particular Green screen found it challenging to interact with live actors.

POST-PRODUCTION

"I have been developing my story telling tricks since I was a kid. I love getting the audience caught up in the story. I feel post production techniques are important to the extent that they contribute to telling the story."

Still from Navman Navigation TVC

After much deliberation we decided it was more cost effective to create this shot as a CGI.

Kim's service can include attending the Tele-cine, supervising the Edit, Compositing, Audio track edit and attending the final picture grade and Sound mix.
